It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Emeritus Francis ‘Frank’ Busta, an internationally recognized food safety scientist and a pivotal leader for one of the most significant periods of our department’s history. Dr. Busta served as FScN Department Head from 1987-1998, guiding us to our preeminent national and global reputation of the late 20th century. Not only did he direct FScN’s rise to notoriety through the collaborative work of incredible faculty researchers, Frank was a prominent scientist in his own right, publishing >125 refereed papers. Notable among his long list of career achievements is serving as IFT President (‘95-’96) and being recruited to establish and serve as inaugural Director of the National Center for Food Protection and Defense (now known as the Food Protection and Defense Institute).
It is impossible to adequately summarize the impact made by one such as Dr. Busta. His influence on our profession as a whole, and on his mentees, colleagues, and friends is incalculable.
