FSCN is pleased to welcome Dr. Kumar Mallikarjunan as its department head, effective January 3.
Below is a welcome message from Dr. Mallikarjunan:
I am thrilled to be joining the Food Science and Nutrition family and I am looking forward to working together for a successful new year. It will be hard to fill the shoes of the many great department heads before me, but with the support of faculty and staff, I believe that I will be able to provide leadership to this great department for years to come.
The strategic planning document provides us with the roadmap for the challenges ahead: increasing enrollment, student retention, increasing research expenditures, and infrastructure enhancement. In Chinese, the same character is used for 'challenge' and 'opportunity.' I am positive that these opportunities will be well met.
I would like to thank Dr. Dan Gallagher for taking care of the department as interim head. In addition to Dan, I am also blessed with having three former department heads (Al Levine, Gary Reineccius, and David Smith) in the faculty, who are an invaluable resource.
I am looking forward to hearing from all the stakeholders (faculty, staff, students, and the advisory council) about the issues that need immediate attention in the coming months. By reaching a common understanding, we can begin to implement specific actions to address these issues.
I encourage you to contact me. Feel free to stop by my office, even if it's just to say hello.
