Throughout the month of March, we will be highlighting alumni of our DPD program as part of National Nutrition Month®.
This week we feature alumna Haylee Kurtzweg (formerly Kochar-Mack), who graduated from the program in 2016.
Where are you currently working, and what are you doing in that position?
I am a Registered Dietitian for a digital health Diabetes Prevention Program to help introduce lifestyle and nutrition changes to those at risk for Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. I also work on the side at a local health club doing nutrition counseling with their members.
Why did you choose Nutrition at the University of Minnesota?
After dealing with some health issues in my early college years, I knew I wanted to be in the medical field. I have autoimmune disease that affects my gut, so I took a nutrition class just to learn more about that and I loved it! I enjoyed every nutrition class at the U. I love getting to keep up with my continuing education as an RD to continue learning about nutrition.
What was your favorite class?
MNT and life cycle!
What is something you wish you had known during your time as a student?
There are ENDLESS opportunities in nutrition, whether you pursue your RD or not. Get out into the field and meet people as soon as possible. Nutrition, especially in the Twin Cities, is a close-knit field. I did informational interviews with RDs and nutrition professionals to learn about different roles and some of those people helped me through my internship and are still friends of mine today!
Favorite healthy snack?
Monster Cookie Energy Bites :)
Funniest question that you have heard since becoming a RDN?
The one I get most often is: butter or margarine?
