FScN Student Computer Lab Policies

The Department of Food Science and Nutrition (FScN) maintains Rooms 220 FScN and 260 FScN as computer labs for use by students, staff and faculty, and for classroom use. All computers are networked (allowing access to the internet and the network printers).

Usage

Current FScN students, staff and faculty are welcome to use these facilities. Students who are not FScN majors or enrollees should not use these facilities. There are several other public computer facilities around campus that are available to students.

Priority

Periodically the computer labs are scheduled for class and registration purposes. These activities have priority. A sign will be posted on the door to the room indicating scheduled activities. The room will not available during these times.

Security

Numerous instances of theft of computer equipment have been reported on campus. It is important that everyone cooperate to ensure the security of these rooms. The rooms are open 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Appropriate Use of the Lab

Appropriate uses include: FScN student class work preparation, individual research work, preparation of publications and major papers, preparation of instructional materials. Examples of appropriate personal research projects are pursuits related to predocs, orals, dissertations, individual research projects, papers, and posters. Note that users with large printings (25+ pages) of personal work must provide their own paper.

Training

The University, through Academic and Distributed Computing Services, offers many short courses on a number of computer-related topics at http://uttc.umn.edu/training/. We encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities. There are courses for beginners, intermediates, and experienced computer users. Food Science and Nutrition does not provide training in the use of the computers in 220 FScN and 260 FScN.

Software Programs

Food Science and Nutrition provides standardized software on all computers in the computer rooms. Additional software is available on some of the other computers such as NDS, scanning software, and other software specific to particular classes. Only software purchased by or licensed to Food Science and Nutrition are allowed on the computers. All other programs or files copied to the hard drive are subject to immediate removal.

File Storage

Please save all your personal files/documents on flash drive or disk. Personal files stored on the hard drives will be purged.

Viruses

It is each student's responsibility to maintain flash drives, disks and files that are virus-free. Check your media frequently, since viruses can do major damage to files and computers. Antivirus software is installed on departmental computers. Students are eligible for one free copy of Symantec Antivirus for a personal computer. See http://www1.umn.edu/adcs/software/security/ for details.

Printing/Paper

Paper for the laser printers is available in the labs. If paper supply is low or has run out, contact the FScN front desk in 225 FScN. Users with large (more that 25 pages) printings of personal work MUST provide their own paper, please plan accordingly.

Note that the 25-page guideline is for the ENTIRE project. For example, if you are working on a 25-page paper and print out several drafts, you need to provide your own paper. Additionally, if you are working on a dissertation that is 8 chapters, and each chapter is 30-40 pages, you need to provide your own paper, even if you are only working on one chapter at a time.
