Douglas G. Mashek


Douglas G. Mashek, Ph.D.
Doug started his current position as an Assistant Professor in April of 2006 following a postdoc at the University of North Carolina. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. In addition to his teaching commitments, he oversees the laboratory (i.e. takes credit and blame for everything) and pays the bills.

Mara T. Mashek, M.S.
Mara is the real boss of the operation. She is the multitasking queen and keeps busy helping everyone else in addition to her own projects

Nikolas G. Tsatsos


Nikolas G. Tsatsos, Ph.D.
Niko is a first-year postdoc who recently obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Minnesota. He studies hypothalamic fatty acid and acyl-CoA metabolism and its role in food intake regulation.

So Young Bu


So Young Bu, Ph.D.
So Young completed her Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences at Oklahoma State University. Her research focuses on the role of acyl-CoA synthetases in transcriptional control of hepatic energy metabolism and insulin resistance.

Jessica M. Sapiro


Jessica M. Sapiro, B.S.
Jessica, a University of Wisconsin graduate, is a second year graduate student who studies intracellular fatty acid metabolism. Specifically, she is looking at how different sources of fatty acids influence gene expression to control hepatic energy metabolism.

Michaela E. Covelli


Michaela E. Covelli, B.S. in progress
Michaela is a Nutritional Sciences undergraduate student. She helps keep the lab running and is learning lots of cool stuff about metabolism.

Katie Knutson


Katie Knutson, B.S. in progress
Katie is a home-grown Minnesotan who is working towards her Nutritional Sciences degree. She also helps keep the lab going smoothly.
