Research

Dr. Earthman focuses on the assessment of nutritional status and dietary intake, body composition, and energy expenditure in clinical populations. Her research expertise includes the use of multiple dilution techniques, DXA, bioimpedance and other techniques for body composition assessment, and the use of doubly-labeled water and indirect calorimetry for the determination of energy expenditure. In ongoing studies of surgically- and diet-induced weight loss, as well as weight-stable overweight and obese individuals, she is investigating factors related to nutritional status, satiety and quality of life, fluid distribution and body composition, and energy balance. Through these studies, she is also investigating issues related to vitamin D status. Another area of research involves investigation of the effects of bioactive peptides on blood pressure regulation in humans.
